The BVI Is Bouncing Back From Irma.

Luckily, the British Virgin Islands largely escaped Hurricane Marie’s wrath. Unaffected by the recent storms are Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada in the Caribbean.

The BVI government, intrepid BVI residents and charter companies are dusting themselves off from Hurricane Irma and preparing for the upcoming season. BVI Premier and Minister of Tourism Dr. D. Orlando Smith stated that BVI charter companies will have 120 boats in the water by November. And most charter companies in the Virgin Islands expect to be up and running for the season in December.

Open For Business

  • Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (Beef Island, Tortola) has reopened to commercial flights. Though international flight connections through Puerto Rico are still limited, the airports on Antigua and Barbados provide alternative connections to the BVI and the region.
  • The Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas reopened to commercial flights on Sept. 28. Travelers are urged to check directly with airlines for flight information.
  •  Governor Kenneth Mapp has announced that St. Croix’s Henry E. Rohlsen Airport will resume flights on Oct. 5. Seaplane flights have already resumed, shuttling passengers between St. Thomas and St. Croix.

  • Native Son Ferry and Road Town Fast Ferry have daily ferry service up and running between Road Town, Tortola (BVI), and Chartlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (USVI).
  • Speedy’s ferry service on Virgin Gorda offers daily intra-BVI service between Road Town and The Valley and between The Valley and Beef Island.
  • Dolphin Water Taxi has reestablished its service between St. Thomas and all points in the BVI.

  • BVI ports are open and accepting cargo to support the rebuilding and full restoration of services on the islands. Supermarkets shelves are stocked with provisions.

Charter Companies

Charter companies in the BVI — including BVI Yacht Charters, The Catamaran Company (mid-November), Dream Yacht Charter (mid-November), Footloose, Horizon Yacht Charters, MarineMax Vacations, The Moorings, The Moorings Power, Navigare Yachting, Sunsail, TMM Charters, Virgin Motor Yachts, Festiva Sailing — are planning to reopen by December.

  • Dream Yacht Charter, which offers bareboat, crewed and by-the-cabin charters will reopen all its bases in St. Martin and the BVI by mid-November. Clients with St. Martin/BVI charters booked in October are being moved to other nearby bases. (All other Dream Yacht Charter Caribbean bases are operating.)
  • Horizons Yacht Charter will reopen January 2018.

Sadly, many favorite watering holes have been sidelined for the time being. The Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke is still standing, and the owners are planning to reopen in the future. Foxy’s was heavily damaged during Irma. And the Willy T’s floating bar was beached. But the owners are planning to rebuild.

  • The Watering Hole in Road Town has reopened as has the popular Chicken Bus. Stout’s Lookout on Windy Hill weathered the storms well and is serving customers.

Sailing The Virgin Islands Is The Best Relief

Though there has been significant damage in certain parts of the BVI and USVI, rebuilding is going full throttle. According to Mark Vanterpool, the BVI minister of communications and works, he reports that “Tortola Pier Park’s cruise and shopping facility [has] a targeted date of reopening at least 50 per cent of retail and food and beverage stores by 1 November.”

Tourism is the Caribbean’s chief source of income. Your visit to Virgin Islands’ ever-beautiful aquamarine waters, stunning beaches and natural underwater treasures are the best way to help.
