Cruising Outpost magazine and Proteus Yacht Charters are joining forces to launch another great Tahitian getaway. Book your boat/berth now for this 8-day/7-night adventure aboard 7 luxurious catamarans that together will sail the exotic islands of Raiatea, Taha’a, Bora Bora and Huahine.

Sailing Tahiti

The leeward chain of the western Society Islands include Bora Bora, Raiatea, Taha’a and Huahine. Barrier reefs and “motu” — small islets with white, sandy beaches — form huge, protected lagoons that make for easy sailing and are home to sea turtles, sharks, dolphins, porpoises, gorgeous coral formations and a kaleidoscope of fish species. It’s a snorkeling and diving paradise. Explore all the wonders of exotic French Polynesia with Tahiti Share The Sail cruise.

Your Hosts Bob & Jody

For almost 20 years, Bob and Jody have been sponsoring these Share-The-Sail events, with the first one being held in French Polynesia. You may remember Bob and Jody from their Latitudes & Attitudes (one of the world’s most popular sailing magazines) days. Their life’s work is to share the cruising lifestyle with as many people as possible by bringing together old and new sailors from all over the world to share the experience.

the “sacred island”

Raiatea, the second largest Tahitian island, is believed to be the cradle of Polynesian civilization. Raiatea and nearby Taha’a share the same lagoon, offering a short sail between the two. Uturoa, a little fishing village on Raiatea, is a great provisioning stop with shops, banks and internet facilities. Mount Tapioi provides a panoramic view of nearby islands.

the “vanilla island”

Totally unspoiled with ancient archaeological sites steeped in history and mystery, Taha’a is a true tropical paradise dotted with vanilla plantations. Sail inside the lagoon between Raiatea and Taha’a to visit the secluded Motu Tautau, sitting off of Taha’a island’s northwest coast (close to Bora Bora). Mount Ohiri and Mount Puurauti rising in the center of Taha’a are the visible remains of an ancient volcano.

Bora Bora

the “romantic island”

Bora Bora’s lagoon features colorful coral gardens and teems with exotic fish and manta rays — giving a new meaning to swimming with the fishes. It’s a short sail to Motu Piti A’au and Taurere Point on the island’s southeast side. Matira Point has one of the most stunning beaches in all of French Polynesia and is also one of the most popular places to swim, snorkel or dive. Between Bora Bora and Raiatea is
a black pearl farm — if you have time
to stop.

the “garden island”

Usually a 4-hour close reach sail from Taha’a, Huahine is actually two islands — Big Huahine and Little Huahine. Avea Bay offers scenic anchorages with excellent snorkeling and diving. Visit local archeological sites to discover Polynesia’s distant past, and don’t miss feeding the sacred, blue-eyed freshwater eels, if you have the chance. Fare Village, Huahine’s main town, has a general store, restaurants and a casual tropical bar called the Huahine Shack, which is popular with cruisers.

Your Guides

Bob Bitchin and his wife Jody Lipkin — world-renown Cruising Outpost editors — will guide the Tahiti Share The Sail cruisers through some of the most beautiful sailing grounds on Earth. Each boat will have a Cruising Outpost team member aboard to assist those who need help with navigating and coordinating with the other boats. But participants will share the sailing and domestic duties, and you will get a taste of real cruising.
